Isekai has roots in older fiction like Alice in Wonderland and The Chronicles of Narnia, but the modern genre took shape in Japanese web novels during the 2000s and 2010s. Series like Sword Art Online and Re:Zero brought the concept to mainstream anime audiences.

The format exploded in popularity because it offers a clean narrative hook: a relatable protagonist dropped into a world the audience discovers alongside them.

Common isekai tropes include reincarnation after death, summoning by a magical force, overpowered protagonist abilities, and RPG-style game mechanics built into the world. Status screens, skill trees, and level systems are frequent worldbuilding tools.

The best isekai stories subvert or complicate these tropes rather than playing them straight. A protagonist who struggles with their new world is usually more interesting than one who instantly dominates it.

Visual novels are a natural fit for isekai because the player already occupies a protagonist role. Being transported to a new world maps cleanly onto the experience of starting a new story and learning its rules through choices.

Isekai visual novels often use the early chapters for worldbuilding exposition, then shift into relationship routes or political intrigue once the setting is established.

Interactive fiction benefits from isekai because the protagonist's ignorance of the new world mirrors the player's. This makes tutorial exposition feel natural rather than forced.

Choices in isekai settings also carry higher stakes by default. You are not just picking dialogue options in a familiar school hallway; you are making decisions in a world where the consequences are unfamiliar and potentially dangerous.
